Writing tips

Hello future writers.

This blog post will be about two things that I noticed that I need when writing.

First thing is Pinterest boards for characters.

As I introduced the rest of the detectives of the team to the main character detective, I found out that I needed a visual for their clothing style, which I decided and wrote down into their profile in October. And so I went on to pinterest and made a board with sections for each of the characters. For example with Jonah Brooks. He wears smart casual clothing and so I added the pictures into his sections. Of course I added not only those but a little different ones for the day he won't wear smart casual. The second character was Isabelle Carter and when I created her I thought about her style and how similar it is with Kate Beckett and Chloe Decker and so I found some of their outfits and pinned them into her sections.

My pinterest Pinterest

The second is An outline with character sections.

I remember looking for different outlines as I started planning my story and found the outline of J. K. Rowling. Her outline scared me at first and so I used the outline Scene by scene inspired by Adele Marie. But now that I write a scene after a scene in my original book, I realized that a lot of times I forget to add what the other detectives on the team do in the scene as the main detective, Niko, searches for evidence. And also it will show me if the character is worthy to be in the story or if Niko does a lot of stuff which is not fair to the other characters. That is why I decided to make a hybrid from these two outlines and combine them into one. The end result will be in one of the next posts. So stay tuned.

NaNoWriMo 2020 update

 Hello future writers.

The first week of NaNoWriMo 2020 is behind us and I want to let you know how I did with my word counts.

First all the word counts of the first seven days in this month.

The Word count of my blog

I wrote 759 words, without counting the My Detective Prologue, where I put the prologue from my original story and ask you for your opinion.

The Word count of my Twilight fanfiction

I wrote 3 754 words and published two chapters on the Webnovel website. Sam's little brother

The Word count of my original detective story

In this I made the biggest steps. I wrote 5 901 words. This is a novel where I found out two things that could help you.

All together I wrote 10 410 words in seven days, which with my lazy routine and procrastination is amazing.

Thank you for reading my blog, please subscribe and comment on how you are doing.

My NaNoWriMo 2020 project

 Hello future writers.

NaNoWriMo 2020 began and I decided on my project. Since this is about starting a new one every year, I decided to be a rebel this time and decided to combine three projects.

My first project is my original detective story "The Murder of the Housewife" where I will concentrate to write as much as I can. I have already done this project in camp, but I decided to add new scenes and rewrite the ones that I already have.  In my outline I wrote about how much my scenes have words and I decided to expand them, so they all at least have 1000 words. I added two new "scenes" into my first chapter and plan to add more to other chapters.

My second project is my Twilight fanfiction because I plan to publish two chapters a week on Friday or Saturday and so I need to write at least 2500 words every week for this project. I concentrate on this project because I publish it on Webnovel: Sam's little brother and I like to see how the graphs show me how many read it.

My third and last writing project is actually this one. My blog. It's not as important as the other two projects but I still love sharing with you my experience.

If you want to help me, you can comment a suggestion to my next question:

  • How would you tell someone that is already a young adult (graduate - undergraduate in criminal justice) that he is adopted? From the adoptive parents perspective, from some person that he knows...
Thank you for reading my blog. Don't forget to subscribe and comment and ideas you have. Or if you need help with something.

My detective prologue

 Hello future writers.

I need your help. Could you please write me a comment on this post about my prologue I wrote? Suggestions, ideas and if it is good. Thank you.

It is possible that there are grammar mistakes, but please ignore those for now.

The silver light of the moon rays from the full moon was shining on the streets of Los Angeles, also known as the City of Angeles. Most known for people coming here to fulfill their dreams of becoming famous, doing anything possible to carry out their dreams, some people get to become famous and rich, while some pure angels become fallen as they experience the dark side of Los Angeles.

The neighborhood of Encino was painted in the dark colors of the pitch-black night and the yellow color of the streetlights, that were flickering every few minutes, sometime quicker and sometimes slower, just for this night.

It created the atmosphere of abandonment that people liked this time of the year.

The streets of the city, Los Angeles and the Encino neighborhood were decorated with bones, scattered across the front yards and orange pumpkins that shone with the candlelight. The orange carved pumpkins of all sizes were by every door of the houses on the streets and old looking plastic bones were thrown around the gardens in the whole neighborhood in no particular order. The streets were decorated will skeletons and other decorations that were supposed to incite fear into the hearts of the people walking around.

The big round shape of the white full moon, hanging in the night sky surrounded by stars, was the only constant light source for the Morrison street. People, that lived on this street could hear the cawing from the black crows, all night, that sat in the treetop of the multiple trees that had grown between the houses. The houses on this particular street were almost all the same. They were painted the same light and dark gray colors, all of them had two floors with white fences around the garden. Their gardens were full of beautiful and colorful flowers and lively green grass. All of the houses had one garage that had only one place for a car and their second car was parked in front of the garage. Of course, this time of the month, their houses changed.

The midnight cold wind swept through the street, sweeping with it brown leafs that fell of the trees and with it, a terrified scream that rang through the Morrison street, but none of the people, walking on the street, reacted to it. It wasn't the only scream that happened this time of the year and so it was nothing unusual, for people to hear it. On the street a lot of screams were made by the young people that were scared by the decorations around the houses.

Thought the atmosphere of the streets and its decorations indicated abandonment, they were full of small feet of little creatures that yearly dressed up in costumes for the All Hallows Eve. Their feet making sound on the pavement as they skipped happily from one house to another. The little kids were dressed in costumes that represented real figures in life or fictional characters.

Another cold wind went through the street, the parents only tightened their hold on their jackets and tried to convince their little kids to put their jackets on, over the Halloween costume. Not believing that their little off-springs were not cold in the thin materials. A lot of the small girls were dressed as princesses in pink dresses, fairies and little goddesses, while the boys were in costumes that represented superheroes from their favorite comic books or they were dressed according to their dream jobs such as firefighters, doctors and policemen. For this night of the year, they could be anyone they wanted. The little creatures were escorted, by their parents or older siblings, from a decorated house to another one and knocking on their doors asking for sweet treats, that they put into their decorated buckets. That were in the shapes of pumpkins, all different in colors.

A princess in a pink dress and her little brother, Superman, with their parents, that were dressed in costumes too for the sake of their children, were walking to the next house, the only one that was not decorated as the rest of the houses on the street. Pieces of toilet paper were thrown on the tree and the house didn't have any carved pumpkins or any bones in the garden. Its walls were dark and light gray, the front yard had lots of colorful flowers planted. No one could be seen in the house even though the windows have shown that the lights were on inside.

“Come, lets go to the other houses.” The mother of the two children said. The house was giving of a different feeling then the other houses.

“No, mommy. I wanna go to this one. It smells nice.” The little girl, she could have no more than seven years, pointed with her right hand to the house with no Halloween decorations.

“Yes, I wanna go there too.” Her little five year old brother said, jumping on his feet and tucking his father’s hand in that direction. The two parents looked at each other. Normally, they would not listen to the demands from their children, but they had to admit that this night was different from all the other ones and so they slowly walked to the front door.

“Alright, honey. But we will go quickly, so we can stop at the other houses where the nice ladies give you more candy.” Their dad put his hand on his daughters hair and lightly petted it.

“Daddy, you will ruin my hair.” The little princess complained and her father quickly withdraw his hand from her hair.

The little kids wanted to go to the house even if it was not decorated, only because they could smell the amazing aroma which came from the opened window of the house. It was the smell of chocolate cupcakes. The parents and their kids knocked on the front door, but none answered. They all listened in front of the door but all they heard was silence coming from the house.

“I am sorry, princess. I guess no one is home.” Said the father of the little girl and her brother and so they went to the next house looking to enlarge their sweet treasure. Forgetting about the house with no decorations.

No one knew, that inside the house a person lay on the ground, taking her last breath. Her blood spilled all around her on the floor. The atmosphere of the street darkened as it was marked with the leaving of a young soul.

Thank you again for this help.

Plan with me - NaNoWriMo - November 2020

 Dear future writers.

The time has come for all of us. NaNoWriMo 2020. And so I prepared my November 2020 bullet journal spreads that I will share with you. Next posts will be my NaNoWriMo project and a preview of the prologue from my original detective project.

This is my November 2020 spread with the NaNoWriMo logo I found on the internet. I drew it and if I am bored I will color it.

This upper picture is my monthly spread. If you notice, it did not change from my previous one. It has space for me to write into the days and for me to write notes and checklists into the note section.

The next page was usually my Chore tracker with little calendars, so I can keep track of what I do in case my brother says I do nothing. This month I changed it into a simple checklist, which I still have to write, because my mother divided us rooms which we clean throughout the week and the next week we exchange the rooms.
Then I have my Word Count tracker where I will draw graphs every day of how many words I have written in my projects.

These are my weekly spreads, in which I numbered the hours and from the previous version, shortened the daily bubbles. Because I realized that I don't use much of the space from 0 to 12 hours because I usually sleep. But for the sake of NaNoWriMo I want to get up earlier and write so I started with 8:00 am. I use these for block coloring where every color means something else. I added a note section so I can keep up with what I have to do.

This spread is from my October month. It is a sprint log, which I wrote my sprints and then calculated my speed. I drew it up every week but realized that I did not use the entire page and I need to find a new spread for my sprint logs.
I think I will write out the weekly spreads then I will have one page for sprints. I am thinking of using my outline from the excel and writing out the scenes from it so I can check if I need to add conversations and description to them. Outlining in Excel. Without adding the scene summary since it will not fit all.

Of course I will update you on my progress in my projects weekly throughout the month and if you want you can send me a buddy request: Leah56982
You can also follow me on my patreon: Miška Vlčejová.

Please comment your suggestions on post ideas and bujo spreads and subscribe to my blog, so you don't miss another post.

World building

 Hello future writers.

World building is a large part of creating a story and a lot of writers think that you have to have the world already build before starting to write your first draft.

Let me tell you about my process. I did not have the locations of my buildings and so I only concentrated to describe the place and not the location in the first draft and the outline.

Since I am writing a detective story located in Los Angeles (for now), I don't have to think about all the different thinks the world consists of. But if you are writing a book in a fictional world, I would recommend watching Adele Marie and her world building series on YouTube. It inspired me to think about my world and I wanted to draw maps, which would be an extra useless step for me. But you never know maybe it will help you.

Anyway, I needed to know where certain buildings are going to be such as the victims house and the detective company.

First thing I did was search for buildings in Los Angeles on a web. One of the detectives apartment I wanted to look like open floor, two floor and open red brick (Later found out that these are not common in Los Angeles) and so I searched until I found something similar on one of the web pages such as Zillow and apartments. I found a district with warehouses and so I put down the address into my excel. This way I worked with all the places.

Second step was to measure the distance so I would know how long it takes and could use these information. I opened google maps and wrote these down.

Third step was to see what was around the building and write it down for further reference in the book.

And the last step: I opened google maps and searched for Los Angeles. Searched for all the buildings and marked them as favorite with stars, hearts etc. so I would easily find them. Then I concentrated on the map so most of the city could be seen and screenshotted it and printed it out.

I did the same with other maps that were more detailed. For example I found the detective company and screenshotted it and printed it out and so I did that with every building and place that I will and would mention in the book.

Please leave a comment with your process, suggestions for new posts and subscribe. You can also subscribe to my patreon, for symbolic money (1 euro and 5 euro) that will help me on the way to create better posts and buy books for the blog and let you see the post ahead of time and you will choose which post I will share next time: https://www.patreon.com/user?u=8331068

Characters

 Hello future writers.

Since characters are one part of creating stories, it is really important to have all information about them before you start writing your book.

WRONG!

I wrote my scenes without knowing all the character information. My team of detectives. All I knew of them were that there was the leader of the boss, the main character - rookie, a female detective etc. Since I had to write out the basic conversations, I used the description of a character or his title in the book such as: "...." the boss of the team said.     "..." the brown haired detective crossed his arms.

This is a technique so you don't have to always use their names and also the word said.

The next step in my preptober was to have some information about my characters and so I started with name and used a generator or names that I liked and had some meaning.

Second step was how would the characters look like? I described them into my character profile in my bullet journal and used hair color and style, skin color, ethnicity, education, clothing style.

One of the hardest steps is background information. I had a lot of problem with this one. But I put a whiteboard next to my bed and wrote out the character names and BUM. A muse slapped me across my face. I wrote 2 sentences about why they became detectives and their family situation.

The only part that I need is the personality, which will be a hard step. I have an idea who will act how and I wrote a few personality traits into their profile, but that is only a beginning and I am definitely going to have to develop my character personality while drafting.

Music or Nah...

 Hello future writers.

This post is on the topic of music. Let me ask you, are one of the person that writes with music. Or cant listen to music while writing?

I am one of the person that writes while listening to music. I listen to music that the lyrics have meaning and imagine the song with a certain scene, for example a fighting scene or a break up.

I listen to songs like that on the way to school or a shop and imagine the scenes that could go with the songs after that I return home and write out the scene even if it doesn't fit into my story. You never know, it could fit into a future one.

Sorry this is a short one, but if you want a playlist I will make a new post. Right now, I am concentrating on writing my fanfiction while thinking about my original story. If you want you can read the twilight fanfiction here: Sam's little brother.

If you want some kind of preview of my original story that I am going to write in November leave a comment in this post. The first post about it will be a prologue.

Please subscribe and leave a comment whether you listen to songs or not and which songs help you write.

With love, Misha.

Preptober update

 Hello future writers.

Its is the start of about week 3 of Preptober 2020 and I come with an update.

I finally decided on the backstory of the main character and have it figured out.

The world building I needed to do is done. But only the basic places. The places where the characters spend time together or alone I still need to figure out.

My next step should be figuring out the backstories for the other detectives:

  • Isabelle
  • Jonah
  • Adam
  • Noah - the leader of the team
  • and minor lab helpers.
For NaNoWriMo 2020 I am still going to be writing my detective story, but I suddenly got the inspiration to write my fanfiction again and so I am going to continue with it. It is a really great idea because I get a break from plotting and worldbuilding.

If you have any suggestions, questions or advice, please leave a comment and subscribe.
Also, recently I created a patreon so If you want you can subscribe:

Preptober 2020 goals

 Hello future writers.

Tomorrow is the first day of October, which means the start of preparing for NaNoWriMo. Yes, I am participating in NaNoWriMo and continuing my detective novel - The Murder of the Housewife, which I started outlining in June 2020 and participated in camp with it. Leah56982 is my nickname on the page and if you want you can add me as a buddy.

My future goals for this month is to make sure that I have as much information about my characters and settings, so I can add them into the story and hopefully add the second plot - the personal life of the main character.

In this month I will tell you some things that I need to figure out for my book.

The first thing is all the locations in Los Angeles and their descriptions, which I will discuss in a later post. But the main thing are character descriptions, their names and definitely their backstories with sub-plots.

Possible spoilers ahead:

One of my biggest problems right now is figuring out the backstory of my main character Niko, who is a rookie detective in a private company that has a contract with the city. Since he is a detective, the city and company had to do a background check and here is the problem, since Nikos family is one of the mafia that rule Los Angeles.

And here is the problem if they knew about his family they would definitely not hire him. A few days ago I thought about the possibility of adoption, but another problem came up with this solution. I want him to know his parents and family to a certain point of his growing up.

If any of you have suggestions about this problem or any locations that could be in my book or scenes that are a must-have in a good detective story, please don't hesitate with writing a comment.

Outlining in Excel

 Hello future writers.

As I said in the last post, I created an excel document to help me with the outline and basically what needs to be written where.

I wrote scenes but sometimes without the conversations or description and the facts that I need for my detective story, that I need to add to them. And when I started looking over the scenes it was really chaotic and so I was inspired to create the document by Adele Marie.

I numbered the scenes and so that it would be more organized I divided the scenes into chapters. Then I wrote which characters will be in the scene, where it is (in Los Angeles county) and the summary of the "scene".

In these columns I tried to fill them up, but as I read, not all of the scenes have to be action packed and have conflict. Sometimes it's good to use normal non-action scene like for example a summary of the case from the detective's point of view.
The goal of the scene can be divided into two:
  1. the goal of the characters in the story - finding evidence
  2. the goal of the scene that I want to portray - for example the first scene.

These two columns I used to help me with the developments, mainly the character one is important because then I can have notes where one of my characters develops or the reader finds out knew information, be it implicit or explicit.
The plot development is just to keep track of the story, that way if I read only the plot development I can have the murder, introduction, collecting evidence, interrogation,..... and then solving the murder case.

These columns are really important, because they help me when I need to know what I skipped in the scene. The first three are self-explanatory, but the fourth column is when a character thinks something (Only Niko because of the 3rd p. o. v.) or the other characters are using monologue.

The first column is a word count of the scene while the third one is what I wrote. I still need to exchange the 2nd and 3rd column. But the "Total" column has formula that counts the first and third column together.

And that is basically it for the excel document. Of course if you have any questions or suggestions please leave a comment. If you have a different method to keep track of these things, please don't hesitate to share them in the comment section.

Please leave a comment and subscribe, so you will get an email when I add another post.

The First Writing

 Hello future writers.

In this post I am going to explain my next step in the process of writing and which method I use with it.

After making an outline in my bullet journal, I opened Scrivener and wrote every scene summary outline in a new scene.

When I started writing I realised that the best method of writing a multiple plot book is one plot at a time. So I concentrated on the main plot of the murder case.

I went through my "scenes" in my Scrivener and wrote the scenes that contained the main plot and when I felt like it I wrote a few words in the other scenes.

Now that I explained my process I can go into details. For example I had a scene where I knew a conversation was supposed to be but I didn't feel like writing it out, I wrote only a few sentences that must be in the conversation.

If there was a description I wrote only the basic stuff not concentrating on the words I used - that will have to wait.

If there was a scene that I needed to write out more or didn't know what was supposed to happen exactly I only wrote notes in the scene and skipped it.

It's a good thing to change the place of writing and so I often went to the center of my town and wrote in my notebook or laptop at our Singing fountain, a fountain that plays songs, and watched the people when I took a break.

After that, I looked over my "finished" scenes and added descriptions of places and character and conversation. Of course when you have 131 "scenes" it is hard to keep up where everything needs to be and so I created an excel document which I will explain in the next post.

Handwriting vs. Typing

Hello future writers,

As you see from the title, this post will be about pros and cons of handwriting and typing, while writing your book, as well as which programs are useful for this process.

The pros of typing are that it will be faster and easier, without hurting your arm and it saves the trees that are made into the paper.

The cons of typing is:
  • you can see the mistakes,
  • when you delete it, it is harder to see the previous version later.

The positives of handwriting are that you can take a notebook with you and write anywhere, without it running out of battery.

The negative of handwriting your book is that your arm will hurt after a while and that it would be possible that you can't read after yourself.

I use the two in combination. I handwrite because it doesn't show mistakes that I have made and I type because it is faster.

For handwriting I use a notebook that has graph paper because I write small letters and I used to type in word document, but now I use Scrivener.
I started using Scrivener this July and let me tell you it is amazing if you have an outline. You can write the outline onto the flashcards and into the scene documents so, when you start to write a new scene, at the top you already have what needs to happen, which prevents the block.
I handwrite because if I want to change something I can put the other stuff into parenthesis so, I later return to it if I want.
I realized that if I write in Scrivener, there is a higher possibility that I will just rewrite an older paragraph then write a new one and that doesn't happen with my handwriting.
Later I retype the handwritten words and add a new ones or rewrite it differently.

Comment what method you prefer and if you have a different one.

With love, Misha.

Multiple projects? Which one to choose?

 Hello Future writers,

Do you juggle multiple projects? Do you have a problem with choosing which one to work on?

Let me help you with this decision making by letting you know these tips to make most of your time and your projects.

The first thing you need to think about is if any of your project is for work or if they are just for your future and your pleasure.

Why do you have to choose?

Of course, people can only write one project at a time and that is why they choose to work on one for the day, week or even month. But is this right? Most people than cant tell if they made the right choice and start losing the motivation for the project because of this and because they can't stop thinking about the other project.

So one of my tips is: Don't choose and don't settle.

One of the best method for this problem is too make a schedule in your writer's bujo or binder. Note down your work or school hour, your clubs or if you do chores a certain time, when you go to sleep and you are left with the time that you can write.

My schedule is still in the process of making because I dont have a job right now, but I still have to learn for my repair Slovak state exams in June, but it is slowly coming together and if you want I can always share it with you.

Let's say that you found out that you can write five hours daily and have two projects. What should your next step be? Two hours for one project and two for the other one with one hour of "free time" where you can think of some ideas for the two.

If you have time that is not five hours in the afternoon, but free time in the morning and afternoon, make a choice which project will be best for the morning and afternoon. You can always change it up the next day, if you don't fill you choose the right one for the morning.

If you want to have more time in the afternoon for writing, make sure that the things that you can, you do them sooner.

If you want any more inspiration for your bullet journal or just anything, you can check out my pinterest account for pins: https://sk.pinterest.com/miska56982/boards/

Please subscribe and comment if you have a schedule for writing.
