World building

 Hello future writers.

World building is a large part of creating a story and a lot of writers think that you have to have the world already build before starting to write your first draft.

Let me tell you about my process. I did not have the locations of my buildings and so I only concentrated to describe the place and not the location in the first draft and the outline.

Since I am writing a detective story located in Los Angeles (for now), I don't have to think about all the different thinks the world consists of. But if you are writing a book in a fictional world, I would recommend watching Adele Marie and her world building series on YouTube. It inspired me to think about my world and I wanted to draw maps, which would be an extra useless step for me. But you never know maybe it will help you.

Anyway, I needed to know where certain buildings are going to be such as the victims house and the detective company.

First thing I did was search for buildings in Los Angeles on a web. One of the detectives apartment I wanted to look like open floor, two floor and open red brick (Later found out that these are not common in Los Angeles) and so I searched until I found something similar on one of the web pages such as Zillow and apartments. I found a district with warehouses and so I put down the address into my excel. This way I worked with all the places.

Second step was to measure the distance so I would know how long it takes and could use these information. I opened google maps and wrote these down.

Third step was to see what was around the building and write it down for further reference in the book.

And the last step: I opened google maps and searched for Los Angeles. Searched for all the buildings and marked them as favorite with stars, hearts etc. so I would easily find them. Then I concentrated on the map so most of the city could be seen and screenshotted it and printed it out.

I did the same with other maps that were more detailed. For example I found the detective company and screenshotted it and printed it out and so I did that with every building and place that I will and would mention in the book.

Please leave a comment with your process, suggestions for new posts and subscribe. You can also subscribe to my patreon, for symbolic money (1 euro and 5 euro) that will help me on the way to create better posts and buy books for the blog and let you see the post ahead of time and you will choose which post I will share next time: https://www.patreon.com/user?u=8331068
